Joy Brennan is a scholar of early Yogācāra thought who takes seriously the Yogācāra and broader Buddhist interest in analyzing both personal and shared delusion and suffering for the sake of finding freedom from them. She has published writings about the Yogācāra theory of the three natures of dharmas, the concepts of intersubjectivity and collectivity in early Yogācāra thought, and how early Yogācāra concepts intersect with white ignorance. Originally from Lakewood, Ohio, Joy has taught in the Department of Religious Studies at Kenyon College in her home state since 2014. She has been a Zen practitioner in the Suzuki and Katagiri Soto Zen lineages for 17 years, and is a dharma heir of Sojun Diane Martin of Illinois. Joy is the founder and teacher at Kokosing Zen Center in Gambier, Ohio, which has just opened a new zendo location in a converted garage next door to her home, where she lives with her partner, daughter, and two furry canine friends.
